Do fees support the market cap? 16 of 20 tokens earn less in fees than a year ago

How much a chain or app collects in fees each year is the most direct sign of whether people actually use it and pay for it. ⑦ puts market cap and fees side by side.

In one lineOf the 20 tokens with data, the median multiple is about 1014x for chains and 80x for apps. The trend matters more than the multiple: 16 tokens earn less in fees than a year ago, and 10 of them lost more than half.

What the multiple means

⑦ = market cap ÷ annualized fees (last 90 days × 365 ÷ 90). Think of it as how many years of today's fees it would take to equal the market cap, similar to a price-to-sales ratio for stocks. The higher the multiple, the more the market cap rests on expectations rather than current use.

Fees are everything users actually pay, no matter who receives it. That is not the same as holder revenue: fees may go to validators or liquidity providers. What holders actually receive is ④.

Chains and apps have different thresholds. An app token is closer to a business and can be compared with revenue directly. A chain's market cap also prices in its role as a settlement network and collateral, so its thresholds are 10 times looser:

Four things the numbers show

1. The gap between lowest and highest is 100,000x

The lowest, UNI, is 3x. The highest, DOT, is 334,004x: its fees over the last 90 days annualize to only about $5.2K, against a market cap of about $1.74B. ALGO is also above 150,000x (about $5.9K a year).

2. Fees are shrinking

16 of the 20 tokens collect less in fees than in the same period a year ago. Ten lost more than half: DOT −98%, SUI −83%, AVAX −81%, ATOM −81%, OP −78%, GRT −75%, HBAR −73%, ADA −72%, ETH −67% and ALGO −57%. Only 4 grew: NEAR +339%, STRK +46%, UNI +19% and LINK +8%.

A multiple is a snapshot. If the price stays flat and fees halve, the multiple doubles. That is why the table adds ⚠ when fees fall more than 50% year on year.

3. Green doesn't mean cheap

STRK is at 133x, which is green by the chain threshold. But it has lost 98.5% against BTC, so the low multiple mostly reflects the price drop. That is why it carries ⚠.

4. High fees don't always reach holders

UNI's fees annualize to about $1.61B, a multiple of just 3x. But most of those fees go to liquidity providers; holders receive the roughly $129.2M shown in ④. When you read ⑦, read ④ too.
